Rep. Devin Nunes (R-Calif.) said he still expects Justice Department Special Counsel John Durham to release a damaging report on the FBI’s corrupt Russia investigation, and while it “may not be as broad as we want it to be,” it will lead to prison sentences for some former senior Obama officials.

Nunes, the ranking Republican on the House Intelligence Committee, told reporter Sara Carter during her podcast Thursday that he still believes justice will be served. According to Carter, the congressman said that Durham’s report could come “as early as next week.”

“I’m still positive, and I guess I have to be, that people are going to go to jail, and they are going to be prosecuted for the Russia grand fiasco and the Russia hoax,” Nunes said. “I still believe it,” the congressman added. “Maybe I’m a little PollyAnna, but I just have to have faith ultimately, that there’s that, you know, there was a special counsel created, Durham does have the power, we’re fully expecting him to deliver the report,” said Nunes.

“It may not be as broad as we want it to be. But look, there are some major perpetrators,” he continued. “I think, as you and everybody else know, we’ve made over 14 criminal referrals. That doesn’t mean 14 individuals, that means 14 different criminal referrals involving multiple individuals… And this is one of the challenges.”

Nunes noted that some bad behavior, such as the Obama administration’s habit of “unmasking” American citizens, could be found not to be criminal, but would provide lawmakers with the opportunity to enact more checks and balances.

He went on to say that whoever leaked the information from former National Security advisor Michael Flynn’s phone call with the Russian ambassador to the media, should go to jail, but that trail has probably gone cold. Nunes told Carter that the very people who were in charge of that investigation at the time were probably the ones who leaked the phone call.

Durham resigned from the Connecticut U.S. Attorney’s Office back in February, but stayed on as special counsel in the investigation into the origins of the Trump-Russia investigation.

In May of 2019, former Attorney General William Barr appointed Durham to investigate “certain intelligence and law-enforcement activities surrounding the 2016 presidential election.” Two weeks before Election Day 2020, Barr appointed Durham as Special Counsel to continue investigating the origins of the Russia probe into the next administration.

Durham’s quiet investigation has lasted longer than special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia probe. So far, his probe has only resulted in one guilty plea, that of FBI lawyer Kevin Clinesmith. Clinesmith admitted to falsifying a document used by the FBI to obtain a Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act warrant to surveil former Trump campaign advisor Carter Page.
